Hello (again) world!

Richard McGuire

Welcome once again to richardmcguire.com.

In the past, this website has simply redirected to my Richard McGuire Photo website (richardmcguire.ca). Today I’m relaunching richardmcguire.com as a separate website, Richard McGuire Publishing, focusing more on the written word.

Watch this space for articles and commentary on subjects of interest, both to the South Okanagan of British Columbia and in the wider world.

This space will also be used to showcase books written by other writers, which I’ve been involved in publishing.

One such book is “It’s a Long and Winding Road: Finding Peace After My Struggle with Childhood Trauma” by Bonnie Dust, a woman from Osoyoos, B.C.

Bonnie approached me shortly after I retired as editor of the Osoyoos Times in November 2018 to ask if I could help her edit and publish a manuscript about her lifetime struggles with mental health.

It was not until the following spring that I had a chance to review her manuscript and discuss it with her. We worked together on it over the course of a year as I juggled this with other tasks, mostly centred around my photography.

Finally, in March 2020, we had the printed books in our hands just as the Covid-19 pandemic was shutting everything down. Our planned book launch had to be postponed indefinitely.

The book has been available since March as an ebook and through print-on-demand from major book sellers. We are now making printed copies available by mail in Canada and hopefully soon through interested retailers in Osoyoos and Oliver.

It’s a Long and Winding Road” is Bonnie’s personal account of her struggle with childhood trauma as she kept a secret about her encounters as a young child with an older man who lived nearby. Much of her life was spent in and out of psych wards as she was misdiagnosed. Only later, were her problems identified as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

The book is Bonnie’s very personal account. Hopefully it will help to break the silence around such topics as the impact of child sexual abuse and mental health more generally.

Please check out Bonnie’s book.

I look forward to sharing more with you in coming weeks and months on other topics of interest.
