Fred and the Boys

Fred holds a hand in the air to show his idea for Aylmer, Ontario, the town near the picnic -- a giant hand above the town. The idea was an apparent reference to a controversy that has put the town in the news recently -- a religious sect in Aylmer has been fighting for its rights to use physical force in disciplining its children.

Fred's humourous stories and jokes are as entertaining as his music, though some of the jokes may have been lost on the many American visitors. After ridiculing Prime Minister Chrétien, Fred observed that some of the Americans may have been confused, thinking the Prime Minister is Tim Horton.

Willie P. Bennett wails out a harmony while strumming his mandolin. Willie P. is a folk legend in his own right.

This picture was taken Friday night, before Willie's 8:30 a.m. Saturday swim in the lake.

Willie gave a solo performance Saturday afternoon, playing his own material. He complained about having overdone the partying in the early hours that morning. When I took this picture he jokingly (I hope) told me: "No photos!"

Notice his amazing harmonica belt that looks like it was made to hold Texas-sized bullets.

Darcy Yates has played bass with Fred for a couple years now. His father, Jim, also a musician, says that Darcy inherited his great qualities from his father -- all except the tattoos and dreadlocks.

Roger Marin plays pedal steel and other instruments, notably electric guitar. His addition to the group a couple years ago has made a big difference to Fred's new sound. Roger's pedal steel is especially evident on Fred's most recent recording "Falling Stars and Broken Hearts."
Sabrina Marin seems destined to follow the family tradition, joining Roger on stage during a show by Roger's father, Roger Marin Sr. She didn't play any instruments, but her performance was entertaining nonetheless. No stage fright for this kid.
Dan Walsh is a newer addition to the band, playing electric and acoustic guitars, baritone guitar, and dobro.
